![]() “ Jamey wanted to call it CORPSEGRINDER because if we called it something else, it mighty not be seen as a solo record – but with CORPSEGRINDER being on it, you know it’s 100% a solo record. It turned out so good, the reception was great for that song, and a few months later he sent me a text and said ‘Hey, look, I have an idea.’” Fisher begins, telling the story of how his solo record came to be. “Basically Jamey and I did a song on his solo record, They Want Your Soul. īut how did CORPSEGRINDER, the project, come to be? What inspired Corpsegrinder, the artist, to go solo? Turns out, as with so many things in heavy music over the last decade, HATEBREED ’s Jamey Jasta is at the heart of it. His most recent vocal offering comes as something a little bit special, though – his new solo project and it’s self-titled debut: Corpsegrinder. and former THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER sticksman Shannon Lucas, and countless guest appearances in between. ![]() The indomitable frontman joined legendary death metal pioneers CANNIBAL CORPSE in 1995 and has remained at the helm ever since, helping to take the band from one of the biggest outfits in death metal to one of the biggest outfits in metal as a whole.ĭespite creating 11 LPs behind the mic with CANNIBAL CORPSE and the rigorous touring schedule that comes with a band at the top of the genre, Fisher hasn’t shied from lending his distinct, guttural roar to a host of other albums and projects over the years from Tampa melodic death metal outfit PATHS OF POSSESSION to SERPENTINE DOMINION with KILLSWITCH ENGAGE ’s Adam D. However, it’s still a hell of a lot of fun as far as entry level death metal goes. There’s few names as unequivocally synonymous with death metal as George ‘Corpsegrinder’ Fisher. ![]() Like all supergroups, Serpentine Dominion suffer somewhat by not being as good as the sum of their parts, for this debut is not at the level as some of the associated acts’ output. From here things don’t get all that different, but it’s not a problem with the nine tracks clocking in at just twenty-six minutes and being as good as they are. The former violently works its way to a crushing end that serves as one the records heaviest moments, while the latter showcases Fisher’s ability to death growl at an impressive pace, reminding you that this certainly ain’t his first rodeo. Both tracks are total barnstormers, complete with stellar musicianship, infectious chant-along choruses and some killer wailing guitar leads.ĭivide, Conquer, Burn and Destroy, and Sovereign Hate continue this trend, with each track featuring their own highlights. The opening one-two punch of The Vengeance In Me ,and Vanquished Unto Thee is a mighty impressive way to kick things off. Of the three bands that are represented in Serpentine Dominion, it’s Cannibal Corpse whose sound is carried over most for a straight up death metal romp through fun, yet familiar, territory. (guitars/clean vocals) of Killswitch Engage, and Shannon Lucas, former drummer melodic death heavyweights, The Black Dahlia Murder, round out the line-up. Why is this relevant? Well, Serpentine Dominion is the latest in an avalanche of supergroups and is fronted by Cannibal Corpse’s George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher. Fast forward a decade or so, and Cannibal Corpse is easy listening compared to a lot of the bands enjoyed by yours truly these days. ![]() In fact, there was a period during my early teens where I actively disliked them and their brand of gore-drenched death metal. There was a time, long before I considered myself a metalhead when I thought Cannibal Corpse were just about the nastiest band on the planet.
